MLV's name became synonymous with that of Purandaradasa. Her raga alapanas not only of major ragas like Thodi, Kalyani, Kambhoji, Bhairavi, Sankarabharanam, etc., but also of janya ragas such as Malavi, Amrithavarshini, Sivashakthi, Hamsavinodhini and many others were rendered effortlessly. She could very easily render an elaborate ragam-tanam-pallavi in uncommon talam with an unusual eduppu, sing kritis set in two kalai talam or regale her audience with popular and semiclassical songs.

Melody, laya and vidvat (MLV) were the watchwords of her rare musical artistry that was an aural feast to both the lay and the cognoscenti. MLV imbibed some of GNB's style in her renditions. Having grown in this ambience, MLV used to give vocal support to her mother as an young teenager and so had the initial training from her mother and later from G.N.Balasubramaniam, (GNB). You can click on the artist name to get to the location on the page with the track.M L Vasanthakumari, popularly refered to as MLV was the daughter of Smt. And in the process, I was able to marvel at how these artists were able to showcase their abilities and the music itself effectively in the 3 or 6 minute duration – hats off to them and hats off to the recording companies that had to foresight to create these records. Getting this together in terms of getting the right volume levels etc was quite a time consuming exercise. Here are a bunch of recordings of various artists, some well known and others not as much. There is certainly a treasure trove of 78 RPM recordings of classical music on youtube, but they tend to be scattered all over and searching for them is not that simple or straightforward.
